Find the right
proportion.

Size is the most consequential decision when choosing a vintage rug. Get it right and the piece anchors everything around it.

The golden rule

When in doubt, go larger. A rug that is too small visually fragments the space and makes furniture appear to float. A larger piece grounds everything and reads as intentional.

Size Categories

Small

Up to 160 × 230 cm

Under 4 m²
Accent layerEntry detailCorner piece

Works best as an accent under a coffee table or beside a larger piece. At least the front legs of nearby furniture should rest on it.

Medium

160 × 230 — 200 × 300 cm

4 – 8 m²

The most versatile size in the collection. Enough surface area to anchor a full seating group with all front legs on the rug.

Large

200 × 300 cm and above

8 – 12 m²

All furniture legs sit fully on the rug. Leave at least 45 cm of bare floor visible around all edges.

Runner

70 – 90 cm wide, any length

Leave 10–15 cm of floor on each side. The runner should extend close to the full length of the passage.

By Placement

Proportion by scenario

Under a seating group

Recommended Size

200 × 290 cm or larger

Rule of Thumb

Front sofa legs on the rug minimum. All four legs preferred for a grounded, intentional look.

Under a dining table

Recommended Size

230 × 300 cm minimum

Rule of Thumb

All chairs should remain fully on the rug even when pulled out from the table.

Beside a large bed

Recommended Size

200 × 290 cm or two runners

Rule of Thumb

At least 60 cm extending from each side of the bed. The rug should be felt underfoot on waking.

Beside a smaller bed

Recommended Size

160 × 230 cm or larger

Rule of Thumb

Same principle — the rug should frame the bed generously on both sides.

Along a corridor or passage

Recommended Size

70–80 cm wide runner

Rule of Thumb

Match the passage length closely, leaving around 15 cm clearance at each end.

Under a desk or work surface

Recommended Size

160 × 230 cm

Rule of Thumb

Large enough for the desk, chair, and the chair fully pulled back from the desk.

Pro Tip

Before deciding, tape out the rug dimensions on your floor with painter's tape. Live with it for a day. You'll know immediately whether you need to go larger.
